Yes it is very important to be honest about what you don’t know and fill the gaps. Sometimes back to basics and be fluent with them. It takes a lot of time but this is only way to deeply understand some topic instead of remember it.
It took me about 2 years to understand this paper.
This was after reading multiple books (notably "Mastering Bitcoin"), learning Cryptography and building a blockchain and the PoW algorithm on my own using Python.
Some things are hard to get, but persistent efforts will make them easy in the long run.
